GREAT LAKES
29/07/2011 - 00:00
Hello again. Thought it was about time I chimed in again with another little dispatch as there is a fair bit of fun stuff happening over the next few weeks...
Next week I'll be hitting the road with my band for a handful of shows in the midwest. Cleveland, Chicago, Madison, Milwaukee.
Last time I was in Cleveland was quite a while ago with SFK where we played to one person and I can tell you - they fucking loved it. Loved it. So I'm hoping we'll see them again and I'm also expecting a record-breaking turnout (just quietly). If you're in Cleveland on Tuesday then why not come and be a part of history! It's at the Beachland Tavern & Ballroom. Which is near a large lake. So the name is clearly a bit of a stretch. But I digress.
Then on to Chicago for a show at Schuba's which I love and am very much looking forward to getting back to. I like Chicago. Nice town. And it's right next to a really big Lake.
And then we'll be at the University of Wisconsin at Madison where I have also played before (as has none other than Erwin Schrodinger) and I remember it being a particularly good and fun show (although clearly not as good as Schrodinger's - he was offered a permanent professorship immediately after walking offstage!).... It's a really beautiful spot for a show. Outdoors on a nice big terrace and also right by a rather large lake (although they didn't have quite the audacity to call it the University of Wisconsin Beach Campus or something like that)....
And finally on to Milwaukee or to be more precise, Port Washington WI which really isn't very far from Milwaukee and guess what - its another outdoor show and it's next to a really big Lake.
And then there's a whole run up the east coast the following week but I'm not even going to go into that. That might require a whole other blog later on (which I may also use as a debriefing session on my general feelings towards Lakes).
And what else? I've been doing a few things lately that should start popping up online over the next few weeks, interviews and performances and the like, there will be links right here as they come along.
In fact, here's one now.
And I'll also be doing a live set for audiotreemusic.com on Saturday August 6th which will be streamed live from the studio... I'll see if they can arrange a cardboard backdrop of Lake Tanganyika.
And what else? You may already know that I'm heading to Australia in October for the 'They will Have Their Way' Tour and also the Melbourne Festival's 'Notes from the Hard Road' show, both of which I am very excited about (I've always wanted to play at the Myer Music Bowl!) but stay tuned to this space for news about a couple of other things in the next week or two...
Well, that's about it for now. Thanks for reading/listening/giving a shit and hope to see you at a show somewhere soon!

ARLINGTON, NYC, US ALBUM RELEASE etc
27/06/2011 - 16:31
Well it's about that time again eh? Time I reached out across the internet to let each and every one of you know just how much I care... 'cause y'know sometimes I just get so damn busy and I let things get all on top of me and you and me end up a'fussin'an'a'fightin' 'cause I forget to tell you just how special you are... well not today... this 'blog' is especially for you. And you only. Each and every one of (only) you.... only...
On Monday night I will return in solo acoustic mode for a headlining set at the wonderful IOTA club in Arlington, VA. I played down there with the band last month which was a great time and I'm looking forward to getting back there and I would certainly love you to come down to the show if you're not working late.. at the Pentagon. Or something. There's nothing on TV on Monday night anyway. Is there?...
And whilst in DC I'll also be chatting and playing a few songs live on Voice of America on Monday. And probably going to the Smithsonian all afternoon before the show. Uh-huh. And probably wondering what the Voice of America would sound like if it was y'know... a voice. James Earl Jones? Morgan Freeman? Jeff Bridges? Bobcat Goldthwaite? Wow, there's a blast from the past. What dimly-lit corner of my brain was he hiding in?!... Anyway. Come to the show on Monday night. Because you're special. Or something.
And then - My album Everything is True gets it's official US release on Tuesday June 28 thru Missing Piece! There will be an official parade down 5th avenue and fireworks over the Brooklyn Bridge and every Mr Softee van in the city will play the album on repeat all day long instead of that other song... actually there will just be an album launch show at Pianos on July 7th. Just come along to that instead.
And then then then then then... well, have a look below... and thanks.

NEW YORK IN JUNE
15/06/2010 - 00:00
New York in June...and what's not to like?... The days and nights are warm, there's an early-summer electricity in the overcast sky that simply won't allow you to stay indoors, you have to get outside and walk around all day and all night and just witness it.. minor, every-day events becoming major spectacles... I've crammed an enormous amount into my first week here.. Mostly just running around making sure everything is where I left it - I'm going to have to impose some routine on myself... soon... Had a great show at the Rockwood Music Hall last Tuesday and I'm looking forward to getting back there again on Tuesday 22nd... Meanwhile I'm going to run along and see our friends Kashmir play at the Bowery Ballroom tomorrow night aaaaannnndd... I just started reading my favourite book again... Which is nice.
Alright then.

EVERYTHING IS TRUE GOES GOLD
19/04/2010 - 06:57
Our Congratulations go out to Paul Dempsey as Everything is True goes Gold.
SUPER POSITION!
14/04/2010 - 08:52
Wednesday evening... Had a wonderful run of shows last week in SA and WA, thanks to all in attendance... I've been feeling about as relaxed and comfortable onstage as I can ever remember feeling and it's been a lot of fun to push/ pull/ articulate/ elucidate/ decipher/ wrench/ extract/ distill something different out of these songs every night.. And to fool around with new things as well... What else can I tell you?.. We're all excited to start our run down the east coast this weekend in Byron, Brisbane and Sydney. Never played the HiFi in Bris before, looking forward to it and the Metro is always a pleasure to play... In other news, our new tour manager, The Great Wizard Cobbler, impressed me greatly when he was able to defy the known laws of physics by being observed to be both in motion and stationary at the same time! True story... He was somehow able to earn himself a fine for being stationary at a stop sign a second too long (and apparently causing obstruction of traffic) and a second fine for running the very same stop sign without stopping (failure to stop at a stop sign)!.. . Now, I've given this much consideration and I will be the first to admit that there is plenty I don't know about quantum super-positions, probability density functions, Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle or Schrodinger's wave equations - but I do think there may be a young police officer who should probably submit his findings to the Nobel committee for immediate peer review and award consideration... Hurrah!
See you on the weekend

PD BLOGS
31/03/2010 - 02:19
Morning all... Hope you're well... I have just returned from my adventures
in the New World... Shows around the place were great fun and thanks to
everyone who came along, I'm looking forward to getting back to the Rockwood
Music Hall in NYC in June, I like that place... Saw some great bands at SXSW and
also caught up with our old touring buddies Kashmir which was fun (I believe
their new album is out here now).. No sooner have I arrived home (and got
the cat back on my good side) and we are straight into rehearsals for the
Burning Leaves Tour which begins next week.. It's been a couple of months
since I played with the band and I'm busting to get out and play the songs
with John, Pat and our newest member Mike on the drums - along with some
other things we've been cooking up in rehearsal and maybe even a new song or
two.. I'm excited to play the stuff now that it's been out for a bit and had
some time to sink in (with me as much as anyone else!)... And then it's off
to the UK and Ireland (and possibly elsewhere?) in May before I bugger off
back to the United States of America-land for the rest of the year.. Busy
times.. I like being busy... Hope all is well in your world(s) and hope to
see you in the next few weeks!
Thanks.

A TRULY LOST WEEKEND
08/03/2010 - 04:04
Hey there.. I just wanted to say that I share the disappointment of
everybody who was planning to go to either of the two festivals that we were
supposed to be playing at over the weekend, both of which were cancelled.
The Lost Weekend Festival was of course cancelled well in advance but
yesterday's Moomba show was a little more frustrating as we were on site and
hoping to play until twenty minutes before our scheduled stage time when the
promoters made the entirely responsible decision to call it off due to the
arriving thunderstorms. Lightning and stage rigging don't mix too
well.
Anyways, I'm sorry to those who had tickets to Lost Weekend and to those who
waited in the terrible weather at Moomba in the hopes of seeing a show. I
was really looking forward to playing a couple of shows before heading off
to the states this week but I'm very much looking forward to getting back
and setting off on tour again in April, hope to see you then.
Thankyou. PD

Hi there. As you may have seen on this site already, myself and my band are
heading out on tour around the country in April which I am very much looking
forward to. It's short and sharp but we're playing in some rather nice
venues around the place so it's quite exciting and after that I will be
heading overseas for the remainder of 2010 so these will probably be the
last Australian shows for a while, hope you can make it along!
In other news, our friends at We Buy Your Kids (who designed my album
artwork) have made an incredibly beautiful video for 'Bats' which will be on
your screens any moment, in fact you can check it out here . More news about some very interesting Bats b-sides to
follow shortly...Aaand what else?... I went and saw Mastodon last night and
now my ears hurt. Can't think. To be continued...

14/12/2009 - 11:01
Hello again. First of all, let me say thanks to everyone who came to the shows last week. After another thoroughly enjoyable set at Homebake on Saturday with the band it was great to head out with nothing but my acoustic guitar and play six nights in a row, most shows in places I've never visited before. The crowds have been great, the set-list has been very loose and there has been a surprising amount of laughter involved... The tour continues this week with shows in Castlemaine, Geelong and Hobart which I'm very much looking forward to... I've heard that the Theatre Royal in Castlemaine is very beautiful and it's certainly been a while between drinks for Geelong and Hobart. Hope to see you there. And lastly but not certainly not least - if you're in Sydney on Sunday night be sure to head down to the Oxford Arts Factory to see the legendary 'Cell Block 69' as they bring all of recorded history to an end on their final World Tour. Think of the quizzical looks on your grandchildren's little faces when you tell them you were there... cell block

After Before Too Long
16/11/2009 - 10:27
The last two nights at the Forum Theatre for Triple J's Paul Kelly tribute concerts have been a major highlight of my year. It was an honour and a pleasure to be amongst such a great bunch of people and to hear them all doing incredible renditions of PK's classic tunes (and having a crack at 'Dumb Things' was a hell of a lot of fun too)...
The atmosphere on and off stage was amazing and celebratory and I fully accept, deserve and even oddly welcome the headache I currently have...Very much looking forward to Homebake and hitting the road again for the solo acoustic shows in December... December?!.. Time flies when you'rehaving too much fun... See you soon... PD Photo Kate Griffin See more photos here

01/11/2009 - 22:31
Oh hi there... Are you sitting down? Lots to tell you... As well as all the
one-off festival shows with my band over the coming summer I'm also doing a
kind of mini-tour next month, by myself with just my acoustic guitar this
time, dates and info available on this very site, do come along!... I've
just finished shooting a video for 'Fast Friends' with director Gemma Lee,
should be on a screen somewhere pretty soon and the single will be released
on itunes shortly as well (along with a few live b-sides too)... And
speaking of screens, I believe the show we did for JJJ at the Troubadour in
Brisbane last month will be broadcast on JJJ and ABC TV this week, check
back here for specific details soon... What else?... Parallel Lions have
just released their debut album! I highly recommend picking up a copy...
Alright, that'll do for now... Thanks..PD
Thanks
12/10/2009 - 09:29
Time flies when you're having fun and all good things must come to an end
etc etc etc... We finished up in Ballarat and San Remo over the weekend and
just like that, it's all done... This tour has been incredible and I want to
say thanks again to everybody who came along to the shows, thanks to
Parallel Lions, Leena, John, Pat, Shan and our crew.. Good times.
I'm off to get a good night's sleep. See you soon.
TOUR
28/09/2009 - 09:19
What a week... The show at the Troubadour for JJJ and JTV was fantastic. Itwas a Wednesday, it was loud, it was hot, it was dusty, the crowd of JJJ winners were fantastic and we had a great time playing in such intimate surrounds. Many thanks to JJJ for putting on the show and to Kid Sam who played an incredible set. Thursday was significant for it's impressive lack of maturity and sophistication but we did get to have a decent meal at a reasonable hour for once. We were reunited with our touring buddies Parallel Lions and Leena on Friday and Saturday for shows on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane, both ofwhich were a great time, the crowd on Friday more than making up for the completely weird day I had and the crowd on Saturday were able to make me completely forget that the Saints had lost the Grand Final so I owe many thanks to everyone who came to those shows... This week I am very much looking forward to returning to The Kingdom, I am eager to hear of the many happenings since my last visit and of the urgent search for a suitable heir to the throne. My thoughts are with you good people...Looking forward to the West Coast on the weekend as well and after that there is only Ballarat and San Remo to go... This tour is too short! See you soon. PD
Like Wales. But Newer. And further South.
22/09/2009 - 02:30
Well we're about halfway through the tour already, time flies when you're having fun yes? and we have been having plenty of fun.. The shows have been great, the crowds absolutely wonderful and even the long drives after each show have been entertaining and... educational? - the drive back from Wollongong afforded us just the right amount of time to get all the way through Iron Maiden's classic double live album 'Live After Death', John Hedigan is now a changed man... I was feeling quite different after thedrive back from Newcastle as well... Thanks again to everyone at the shows, looking forward to Qld (especially Wednesday at the Troubadour).I cannot get Parallel Lions and Leena songs out of my head. See you soon.
Milestone
14/09/2009 - 07:30
It's been a memorable start to the tour and it's been particularly great to spend the last two nights at the Corner Hotel which is one my favourite venues and somewhere that SFK have also had a lot of memorable shows... Richard, who books the shows at the Corner, is the same guy who gave SFK our very first gig and it was great to be joined onstage by Clint and Steph on Saturday night to mark the occasion of 15 years to the day since that first show... Thank you to everyone that was there to share that little milestone with us... My ears won't soon forget it.. It's also been great hanging about with old friends Parallel Lions and new friends Leena and Will and getting to hear them play amazing sets each night, I strongly encourage getting along early to see them... This week myself, Patrick John Bourke, John Patrick Hedigan, Shannon James John Fitzpatrick O'Vanderwert (as well as the mascot and the German) will roll on into NSW and we're very much looking forward to it...Thanks again.

26/08/2009 - 05:15
Hey folks... How goes it?.. I feel like I've packed about a year into thelast ten days, it's been great... Lots of you have had very kind and positive things to say about the record and there's lots of good stuff happening with it so for that I thank you...The tour is just around the corner and I can't wait - less talky-talky, more singy-singy... See you there.
EVERYTHING IS TRUE IS HERE
13/08/2009 - 07:34
Good morning all... My first solo record Everything is True comes out
today... It's a strange and exciting and somewhat baffling feeling
(uh-oh)... I suppose like any big project one might undertake there is
always a long period of not seeing how or when it will ever be finished and
it seems very far off and unreachable in the vague, unknowable future... and
then one day you're just there and it's finished... And then it’s the
process you've just been through to get there that seems far away and vague
and unknowable... It’s enough to make someone start rambling off cheap
philosophical shite... So let’s not get hung up on the nature of time eh?
Here we are, here it is - for now anyway... I thank you for reading and
listening, I hope you enjoy the record and I’m looking forward (again) to
being out on tour playing these songs...

Hiya. Had an excellent time at Splendour in the Grass, thank you to all present at the GW Mclennan stage for sharing our 2nd show with us and making it such a good time...all these one-off shows are making me very antsy to get on tour and into 'the swing of things' as they say (mostly in places where it's still 1959)... I decided not to play 'Time to Pretend' on Saturday lest MGMT come over and shoot me with their bows and arrows, but we did play this instead - click here

Giant leap
22/07/2009 - 05:54
Greetings on this wet winter Wednesday... Feeling ever so slightly bleary and hoarse after playing the very first show last night with my new backing band (who last night were dubbed 'The All-Seeing-Eye Dogs')... It certainly felt like a good night to take a giant leap forward, maybe it was due to the 40th anniversary of men first walking on the moon, maybe it was the imminent arrival of the longest solar eclipse for a century, maybe it's just the rough-around-the-edges romance of Fitzroy on a Tuesday night, but we had a fantastic time working through all the new songs and shuffling through a few cover versions as well, some perhaps more dubious than others but you never know if you never try eh?...Big thanks to everyone that came out on a Tuesday night to see us through our maiden voyage - I think I can safely say that we are now eager and ready to storm onto the hallowed GW McClennan stage at Splendour in the Grass this Saturday evening and shake it like it's the 2nd show we'll ever do... NEW NEIGHBOURS
16/07/2009 - 00:22
Hiya.. Welcome, welcome.. Come on in.. Renovations are still happening but feel free to have a look around... There may still be some wet paint around or the odd hole that still needs plastering but you can get the general feel of the place... This will be home for the next while... Most stuff will usually happen here in the main area but there's a few other rooms with different things going on... Feel free to check them out and please drop in anytime to catch up on what's been happening or what's coming up... See you soon!

HERE COMES RAMONA...THE SECOND SINGLE FROM 'EVERYTHING IS TRUE'
18/06/2009 - 04:17
We are extremely excited to announce the release of the second single from Everything is True. 'Ramona Was A Waitress', is a complete contrast to the stripped back acoustic sparseness of 'Out the Airlock'. A pounding meditation on artificial intelligence, love, death and robots, 'Ramona' sees Paul manning all instruments led by a driving mechanical pulse into a beautiful piano-driven chorus that carries you away somewhere else entirely.
Ramona arrives digitally via itunes on July 3rd, and then as a very limited edition CD single with 3 exclusive b-sides (including Paul's much talked about cover of the Kim Carnes classic, Bette Davis Eyes') instore on July 24th.

PAUL ADDS FREE SYDNEY SHOW
05/06/2009 - 06:22
If you live in Sydney's East, you'll know that in addition to the monolithic Westfield at Bondi Junction and the picturesque beaches, one of the main attractions of the area is the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi which does an excellent line in live music every Wednesday night. Paul will be playing a solo acoustic show there on Wednesday the 17th of June to accommodate all those who missed out on tickets to the Annandale show, and of course, anyone else who fancies it. It's a first in, best dressed kind of affair with no pre-sales - it's free - so arrive fashionably early, Paul would love to see you there. Click here for details

ADELAIDE, PERTH AND BRISBANE SHOWS JUST ANNOUNCED - TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW
15/05/2009 - 04:26
Having initially planned on doing a mere two solo shows in Sydney and Melbourne, it now seems fairly obvious that was perhaps a little bit light-on after all the time Paul has spent away - certainly judging from all of the messages we received from folks in the other capitals suggesting this to be the case. Consider the point taken, and rectified in the form of more June solo shows in Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. The Melbourne show sold out in two days, Brisbane's first Troubadour and Sydney's show have also sold out, so be sure to get in early for these shows, as the venues are intimate. Intimate mode.

NYC
16/04/2009 - 16:06
Greetings from New York... It's a pleasure as always to be in this magnificent city....
Just a quick reminder that if you happen to be in any of the five burroughs this Thursday night, I will be playing at The Living Room (154 Ludlow St, Lower east side), onstage at 10pm, come on down.
Album is all but finished, stay tuned for a couple of announcements and some new music right here, next week...
I made another friend... I can feel a theme developing...
Newsflash...
07/04/2009 - 18:13
Well, hello there... I've got a few days out of the studio at the moment.... I'm playing a show at the Hotel Cafe on Friday night at 9pm if you happen to be in the LA area...
In other news, the first track to be released from the album is a song called 'Out the Airlock', which you'll be able to download or request on your favourite radio station in a matter of weeks... who'd have thought?

31/03/2009 - 23:33
31/03/2009 - 23:32
TUESDAY
31/03/2009 - 20:46
Seven songs down, a few more to go... after the first couple it gets much easier to put the stamp on a song and move through to the next one... and even with the long hours in the studio I am having a wonderful time and learning many important life lessons... like if a car is driving directly head-on towards you at an unusually high speed - the time you spend quibbling about whose lane it's supposed to be could be better spent getting out of the way... true!... there are so many things this town is ready to teach if you are ready to learn...
Doug about to demonstrate his legendary reverse-mix-handstand...
In the Airlock...
26/03/2009 - 22:02
You spend over a year working on something and thinking about it all the time and changing it and refining it and then it all comes down to that one moment in the mixing where you have to declare it absolutely, finally, definitively done... and there's no such thing.. (so you go out on tour and try to play some definitive version every night... and there's no such thing... but all the fun is in the pursuit)... mixing a record is just the bit where you are forced to commit to something... unless of course you happen to be Axl Rose.
But it's good... making a decision about anything is usually accompanied by a great sense of relief... right, I'll quit boring you now and go try bungee-jumping or something....
Day one....again
23/03/2009 - 22:27
On the other side of the hill... again... a new studio, a new dog... first cab off the rank (rank or rink? oh sweet jesus, I'll be up all night) is a song called 'Take us to your leader' - the word 'falsetto' doesn't seem fair...
23/03/2009 - 22:15
Stage two...
10/03/2009 - 11:16
From a reality far from burger joints to a burger joint far from reality... This time next week I'll be in LA to begin mixing the album and you know what that means....

The Waiting Game
17/02/2009 - 00:59
Playing the waiting game for a couple of weeks until the mixing stage of the record begins... It's my least favourite game... I'm crap at it... Keep reading.. Keep writing.. Talk to the cat.. Do stuff that needs doing and try not to do stuff that doesn't need doing... Don't let the almost-finished record in the other room drive you bat-shit-crazy... Get really good at the waiting game.

Just a few days to go now... I'm at that point where I can hardly remember what's happened over the past few weeks but somehow there is a record that wasn't there when we arrived... It's quite strange really.. Where does the time go?... Another cup of tea then....

Wayne and I realized last night that we began recording this album on the same day that CBS bought Fender in 1965... After much discussion, debate, stand-up philosophy, bad calculations, laughter and tears we decided that we should buy the Fender Musical Instrument Corporation for ourselves.. We may not have quite the required funds but we have some very audacious hopes...

Day One
25/01/2009 - 01:34
And we're off!... So this is home for the next few weeks while we record this album, 'we' being myself and engineer Wayne Connolly, he of the vintage cars and guitars, producer to the stars, patron saint of the huntsman spider... We are wedged somewhere between a forest and an ocean, it's a nice place to be, cockatoo alarm clocks and frog lullabies... We've managed to turn a small guest-house into a studio.. The coffee does not make itself and the burger joint is nowhere to be seen. The bedroom is the control room...which is also the living room... Etc..

I think this fellow lives in the roof... We don't really see him all day and then he turns up in the evening.. I don't mind him listening in so long as he stays outdoors...

We're into the best part of any recording session, where all the basic, fundamental parts are there and you can start to experiment and throw ideas at the wall and see what sticks.... What else?... We've officially adopted the snake.. And... I had a truly wonderful episode of food poisoning on the weekend... And.. While I was laid up I read 'The Henson Case' by David Marr which I highly recommend (although it made me feel sick on top of feeling sick).. and... Feeling much better today thank you... Back to it...
